Shopify Checkout Extensibility upgrade

Updated

Published
Aug 6, 2024

In February 2023, Shopify announced that “checkout.liquid” is deprecated and that the platform is switching to Checkout Extensibility. Recently, Shopify released two upgrades that must be implemented in August 2024 and August 2025. Users should upgrade the Information, Shipping, Payment, Thank you, and Order status pages as Shopify stops supporting  ”checkout.liquid”.

What’s changing?

Shopify offered ”checkout.liquid” as a checkout customization solution. However, it had limitations, so in February 2023, the platform started moving from ”checkout.liquid” to Checkout Extensibility.

The key benefit of the new Checkout Extensibility is higher security. In ”checkout.liquid”, JavaScript was executed in the browser, which is less reliable than executing in a sandbox. Compared to ”checkout.liquid”, Checkout Extensibility has other benefits:

  • Straightforward customizations that are easier to test and maintain
  • Compatibility with Shop Pay
  • Easier access to new features without complicated upgrades

Upgrades timeline

Shopify has set two deadlines to upgrade pages:

👉August 13, 2024: Upgrade your Information, Shipping, and Payment pages.

👉August 28, 2025: Upgrade your Thank you and Order status pages, including your apps, using script tags and additional scripts.

See the detailed instructions from Shopify on how to upgrade to Checkout Extensibility.

Checkout Extensibility for Stape’s Shopify App users

Stape’s Shopify App supports switching from ”checkout.liquid” to Checkout Extensibility. For the first upgrade (deadline August 13, 2024), you won’t need to do anything additional, you just need to have an updated Shopify App (it updates automatically when you open it in Shopify Admin).

As for the second upgrade (deadline August 28, 2025), you will need to go to your Shopify Admin → Apps → Stape Server GTM → Data Layer tab → check box “I'm using a Checkout Extensibility for thank you page”.

August 2025 seems far away, but you can do this upgrade now so as not to get back to it later. In this way, you will switch to Checkout Extensibility quicker and can check the benefits of it. Shopify claims it provides a broader range of customization options.

To sum up

Shopify is switching to Checkout Extensibility from ”checkout.liquid” due to security reasons, easier customization testing and maintenance, and compatibility with Shop Pay. You need to upgrade your information, shipping, and payment pages by August 13, 2024, and the Thank You and Order status pages by August 28, 2025.

Stape’s Shopify App supports this change; however, with the second upgrade, make sure to check the box “I'm using a Checkout Extensibility for thank you page” in your Shopify App.
