  1. Create a server GTM container.
  2. Set up sending data from the web to the server GTM container.
  3. Upload Yelp CAPI tag to server GTM.
  4. Configure the tag according to the data you want to track.
  5. Add the trigger to a tag.
  6. Test the setup.

In this article, we are going to guide you through the configuration process in detail.

What is Yelp CAPI tag?

Yelp Conversions API tag developed by Stape is a handy solution for sending website, offline store, or app events and parameters to Yelp servers through the Yelp Conversions API. With the help of a tag you can create Yelp integration with Google Tag Manager. This integration involves adding a tracking code to your website to ensure data is accurately collected and sent to Yelp servers.

What are the benefits of Yelp tag?

Implementing the Yelp Conversions API tag has many benefits compared to using Yelp Pixel, another way of tracking ad performance. Since you need to use server-side tracking for tag configuration, CAPI integration provides high protection against ad blockers and browser restrictions, while Yelp Pixel's code is exposed to their impact.

With the Yelp CAPI tag, you have more control over the data you track, which makes it easier to comply with privacy regulations.

The tag allows you to track standard Yelp events and set the custom events. Also, Yelp CAPI tag supports event deduplication to remove redundant events.

Before starting

Before setting up the Yelp CAPI tag, ensure you have:

How to configure Yelp CAPI tag with Google Tag Manager?

1.  Download Yelp Conversions API tag from GitHub and unzip the file.

2. Import the tag in the server Google Tag Manager. To do it, go to the "Templates" section on the left → "Tag" → "New" → "Import". In the end, save the template.

3. Create a new tag, as a tag configuration choose "Yelp Conversions API".

4. Configure the tag.

4.1 Choose the “Event Name Setup Method”:

Standard - from the drop list select one of the standard names.

Inherit from the client - with this option, a tag will parse server GTM event names and match them to Yelp standard events.

Custom - add a custom event name.

4.2 Choose the event conversion type: website, physical store, or mobile app.

4.3 Add access token. The access token is a secure credential that allows authentication and interacts with the Conversion API. Check how to find access tokens in Yelp's documentation.

4.4 (Optional). Check the box "Use optimistic Scenario" - in this case, the tag will call gtmOnSuccess() without waiting for a response from the API. It allows speed up server GTM response time but your tag will always return the status fired successfully even in case it is not.

4.5 (Optional). Check the box "Test Mode" - it allows you to avoid getting info into the main source. Use it before you are going to test the setup.

4.6 Add the server, user data, and/or custom data parameters.

5. Add the trigger for a tag. Test the setup.

6. Use both web and server GTM debugs to test that the tag is triggered correctly. In case of any difficulties, see the detailed guide on debugging and monitoring.

Conclusion

Yelp Conversions API tag is an easy-to-set-up solution with many benefits. Among them are more precise data tracking and high data control. Such benefits are provided thanks to server-side tracking, which you should definitely consider ;)
