Problem: insufficient marketing results

The client’s company initially had only browser-side tracking configured for their Meta Ads, which relied heavily on Meta’s Event Setup tool to track basic interactions like button clicks and page views. This approach was insufficient for achieving optimal marketing results as it did not provide granular insights into user behavior or accurately capture conversions. 

With 81.3% of their traffic coming from the Safari browser, known for strict tracking limits, they needed a stronger solution to maximize their marketing budget and improve analytics.

A detailed review of their website and technology showed the need for server-side tracking to boost data accuracy and reliability. Given the high percentage of Safari users, it was crucial to consolidate all tracking within a Safari-compatible Google Tag Manager (GTM) container.

Solution: server-side tagging tools utilization

The implementation process is ongoing, with continuous optimization being a core part of the strategy. Multiple versions of the tracking setup have been tested to identify the most effective approach. Given the evolving nature of digital marketing and tracking technologies, the timeframe is less about a fixed duration and more about iterative improvements and adaptations to maximize performance.

One of the main challenges was deciding on the optimal mix of webhooks, server-side, offline tracking, and website tracking to achieve the best results. This required careful consideration of various factors, including the importance of capturing not just user data but also browser and geo information to ensure comprehensive digital attribution.

Results: significant conversions increase

After implementing server-side tracking with Stape, the client observed several significant improvements:

- Total Requests Tracked: 149,430

- Requests Recovered from Ad Blockers: 4,297 (2.88%)

- Requests Recovered from Tracking Prevention: 22,977 (15.38%)

- Requests Affected by Tracking Prevention: 7,694 (21.33%)

- Before switching to server-side tracking, there was no Event Match Quality (EMQ) score and tracking was limited to browser-side. 

Now, using the Conversion API, the client team noted a 30.7% increase in reported conversions. Additionally, one month after the full implementation of the new tracking setup, there was a 58.67% decrease in cost per purchase, demonstrating the effectiveness of the enhanced tracking capabilities in driving more efficient marketing spend.
