Where to find the Consent event name

The guide explains what the “Consent event name” in Stape’s Setup Assistant stands for and how to find the value.

When you select “Other” platform as the consent provider, the field “Consent event name” appears.

The field must be filled with the name of the event that is being sent to the dataLayer after a user interacts with the consent banner and the consent status is updated (accepts or declines cookies).

This parameter is required as the tags require the data on the consent status.

Check the official documentation of the Consent Management Platform (CMP) you use. It should have a unit about integration with Google Tag Manager or dataLayer. In that section, find an event name that the platform pushes to the data layer.

For example, the Pandectes platform states in its documentation on the Cookie Consent event in the dataLayer pushes event named “Pandectes_Consent_Update”.

Test using GTM Preview mode

Do the following actions to get the name of the event that is pushed using Preview mode in GTM:

  1. Run Preview mode in your web GTM container or web and server containers if you implemented server-side tracking. Add your website URL.

Note: If you are using an ad blocker, please disable it as it may prevent the preview from loading.

2. After the website page is loaded, click on the consent banner (accept or decline).

3. Get back to the Tag Assistant window and check the section on the left - right after your click, there should be the name of the event that was sent to dataLayer. On the example with Pandectes, it would be “Pandectes_Consent_Update”.

What if there is no event?

Some consent management platforms may not send events to dataLayer; that’s because it is not integrated to work with dataLayer. In this case, it is better to switch to another CMP that can send events.
