Google Data Manager API connection

Updated Aug 7, 2026

The Google Data Manager API gives you access to the Data Manager API through Stape, simplifying how customer lists are configured in Google Ads and how audience data is sent. It works with the Google Customer Match and Google Data Manager API Conversion Events tags for sGTM to push audience data into Google Ads and Display & Video 360. This connection removes the need to build and maintain a direct Data Manager API integration.

This connection is only applicable for sGTM containers.

The Google Data Manager API connection is available for sGTM containers on the Pro subscription plans and higher.

How it works

  1. Enable the Google Data Manager API connection inside your Connections dashboard.
  2. The tag then authenticates directly through Stape’s secure service account, removing the need to manage private Google Cloud IAM keys yourself.
  3. The audience/customer data flows from Stape to Google Ads through the Data Manager API.

Here are the examples of how and when you can use the connection:

Before you begin

Ensure the Google email you plan to authorize on Stape is a user with at least Standard or Admin access in your Google Ads / Display & Video 360 account.

How to connect Google Data Manager API

  1. Log in to your Stape account and select your sGTM container from the dashboard.
Select your sGTM container

2. Click the Connections tab.

3. Click Sign-in in the Google Data Manager API section.

Click Sign-in

4. Sign in with a Google account that has Admin access to the Google Ads account.

How to verify the connection

  • In Stape – the Google Data Manager API connection shows you as signed-in.
In Stape
  • In Google Ads – open Audience ManagerYour data segments, and confirm the Customer Match list appears.
In Google Ads
  • Test – in Google Tag Manager open the sGTM Preview Mode and perform some actions (like adding to cart) on your website to trigger an event. Select the Google Customer Match tag and inspect the outgoing HTTP request. If the API returns a 200 OK status with no error messages, the connection is successful and Google is processing your data in the background.
In GTM

How to disconnect or reconnect

  • Disconnect – click the Sign out button on your connection. This revokes Stape's stored token for that connection.
  • Reconnect – click Sign in again and complete the authorization flow.

Troubleshooting

The access was revoked or the token is expired

Usually, when the token expires, Stape automatically refreshes it. If not, then you’re automatically disconnected from the platform. Click the Sign-in button again, and complete the login.

Wrong account was selected

Disconnect the platform by clicking Sign out, then click Sign in again and choose the correct account with access during the authorization step.

Data isn't appearing in the destination

Check the following:

  • Confirm the Google Customer Match tag is installed and configured
  • The connection status in the dashboard is Signed-in
  • The signed-in account has the Admin level of access.
  • Your account isn’t suspended or paused.
